Ordering information ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I. Introduction --------------- History of Del@Zip Del@Zip was written May 1992 by Alisanne J. Fleitman as my first "real" VB application program. It was entirely enspired by a message on CompuServe from Jonathan Zuck. In the message he wished for a utility that would scan the header of a ZIP file, see what files are in there, and delete them from the current directory. This inspired me to take the idea up as an exercise while learning VB. You have the result. What is Del@Zip? Del@Zip will read a ZIP file and determine what files are stored in the ZIP file. You can then delete selected files or all files that are in the same directory as the ZIP file. This is a very handy utility to have if you frequently download files from BBS's and other sources such as CompuServe. This utility enables you to extract the files in a ZIP'd file and then remove them very easily without having to tediously delete them one by one. II. Files on this Disks ----------------------- Below is a list of the files that should be on this distribution disk: DEL@ZIP.EXE DELZIP3D.EXE MANUAL.TXT MANUAL.WRI README.TXT (Note: DELZIP3D.EXE is almost exactly like DEL@ZIP.EXE. The only difference is that it uses the three-dimensional look described in Section 5.2 of The Waite Group's Visual Basic How-To.) III. How to Install ------------------------ If you have received Del@Zip on a diskette, you can use the File Manager to copy all files on the diskette to your hard-drive. If you have received Del@Zip from a BBS or other source in a ZIP file, you have already used PKUNZIP or similar program to extract the files (since you are reading this file.) IV. ERRORS/PROBLEMS -------------------- You have version 1.00 of Del@Zip. Please report all problems promptly to me so that I can determine how to correct them. I have done my best to make sure that the program works as intended and will not cause any unintentional harm. However, it is always possible that your setup is very different than mine and Murphy's Law is never far away. You can reach me through CompuServe (76367,2557) or through CPS-BBS (908-289-3981) or by mail at the above address. V. How to use Del@Zip ---------------------- General ------- To use Del@Zip, you will need a copy of the Visual Basic run-time file (VBRUN100.DLL). You may already have this file. It is available from many local BBS's. If you have obtained Del@Zip on a diskette, the run-time file will be found on the diskette. If you obtained Del@Zip from a BBS or other source in a ZIP file, it will be omitted to save space. You can run Delzip from the Program Manager by using File Run and typing in the complete path to the Del@Zip program. eg. c:\winutil\delzip If you will use it often, you may want to place the program in one of your appplication groups. Check your Windows User's Guide or on-line Help if you are not sure how to do this. On-Line Help ------------ To access the on-line help available for Del@Zip, click on the command button that reads HELP. You will then be able to select from six different help topics that will explain general methods of using the Del@Zip program. ZIP File Selection ------------------ First, use the drive and directory boxes to select the desired directory. The file box will then contain a listing off all ZIP files. Select the desired ZIP file. The next step is to READ the ZIP file by clicking on the READ button or by double-clicking the file list. If the READ process has found files and you do not wish to delete any, you will have to use the CLEAR function before you can select another filename. The READ button changes to the CLEAR button once you have READ a ZIP file that finds files. To CLEAR the list of files found, click the CLEAR button or double-click the filename. Confirmation before deleting ---------------------------- Confirmation is a default setting of Del@Zip but can easily be changed. If you want Del@Zip to stop and ask you if you REALLY want to delete that file, don't change the setting for "Confirm Each Delete". If you want to speed up the action and are sure that you want to remove the file(s) without any fussy double-checking, click on the box next to "Confirm Each Delete" to turn off Confirmation. Remember, you are not deleting ALL copies of the files. If you accidentally remove a file you really wanted to keep, you can always extract it from the ZIP file again. Delete All ----------- Delete All is the optional setting of Del@Zip that enables you to easily remove all files that are in your ZIP file from the current directory with one click. When you are operating Del@Zip with the Delete All option, the steps are as follows: 1: Select ZIP file 2: READ Zip file 3: DELETE all files (Note: If you leave Confirm Each Delete set on, you will be asked before each deletion if you want to delete that file. You will have three options: Yes, No, Cancel. Yes results in the immediate deletion of the file, No moves on to the next file name, Cancel exits the deletion process - but does not Un-delete any files already deleted.) Delete Selected --------------- Delete Selected is a default setting of Del@Zip that can be easily changed by clicking on Delete All. When you are operating Del@Zip with the Delete Selected option, you will have to select files to be deleted one at a time. The steps are as follows: 1: Select ZIP file 2: READ Zip file 3: Select file name 4: DELETE file name (Note: If you leave Confirm Each Delete set on, you will be asked before if you want to delete the selected file. You will have three options: Yes and No. Yes results in the immediate deletion of the file, No does not delete the file. VI. Other Products ------------------ When you register your software I will send you a updated list of other products. As of May 1992 when Del@Zip was released, it was the only released shareware product I have, so I am being optomistic. Please register your copy so I can continue programming instead of "getting a real job". VII. Shareware Distribution --------------------------- Shareware is a growing concept for now and the future. This gives YOU the chance to freely obtain and try out this software to see if it fits your needs. Shareware means that you try it, and if you like it, you should BUY it.... If you continue to use this Shareware program, after trying it out, you are expected to register your copy with CPS and pay the registration fee. What you get in return will be the latest version of this program along with the source code. Please support the Shareware concept. This will enable me to create other new programs and to support this one. There are real advantages to the Shareware system. You get to try out software to make sure it's compatible with your system and that it fits your needs before you "buy" it. CPS saves the expense of advertising, packaging and distribution and passes the savings on to you. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes finding software easier, because you can try before you buy. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it. Shareware Dealers ----------------- If you are a Shareware dealer and plan on adding this program to your library, please send a letter so your company can be put into the dealer database. This will allow me to send you any updates to this program and all future Shareware programs that I develop. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY ---------------------- THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS," THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND ALL SUCH WARRANTIES ARE EXPRESSLY AND SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMED. NEITHER CPS NOR ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE CREATION, PRODUCTION, OR DELIVERY OF THIS SOFTWARE SHALL BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE SUCH SOFTWARE . THIS DISCLAIMER SHALL BE GOVERNED BY THE LAWS OF NEW JERSEY. Distribution restriction ------------------------ The files and programs on this disk may not modified or deleted. Please do not arc or zip these files. Disk vendors, those who sell Shareware for a profit shall not charge more then $10.00 per disk. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other package, without written permission from CPS. The distribution disk cannot contain any other programs. If you plan on adding this program to a CD-ROM package, please write me for approval. When distributed via a modem link all files must be transferred in a archive format. I recommend that you use ZIP or ARC format when you would like to transfer this program over a telecommunication link. VIII. Ordering Information --------------------------- If you like this program, find it useful, and believe it makes your life a little bit easier, please register your copy by sending $10.00 to me at: Compu Pro Services 331 Murray Street Elizabeth, NJ 07202-1815 Please do not send cash in the mail.
